What is INIT 2022?
INIT is a celebration for the start of Major League Hacking's 2022 Hackathon Season, running from June 27 through July 5th! While this is the first time we are running INIT, the format will feel familiar to those who have participated in Local Hack Day. You can expect to complete challenges, hear about BIG community announcements, chat at hacker hangouts, enjoy fun live sessions, and make new memories (and memes).
We will be bringing back all of your favorite features of MLH events such as Local Hack Day style challenges, live technical sessions with MLHers, mini-events galore, and some cool content from our partners! Here’s a sneak peek:
- Lots of exciting 2022 Season announcements
- Beginner-friendly workshops
- Challenges for all difficulty levels and all topics such as design, social, technical, entrepreneurial
- Hacker-run guilds and leaderboards
- Panels and talks from friends of MLH and our partners
- Live sessions run by MLHers
- And maybe an appearance from Totally Not Ryan (TNR)
Can I get swag at this event?
Yes, of course! INIT 2022 will be the first opportunity of the 2022 Hackathon Season to get swag and it will even include our new season mascot… You’ll have to participate to find out!
What is a Guild? How can I be a part of it?
One of the best parts of our community is that it allows people to meet and make connections with others, regardless of where you live. guilds are smaller communities within Major League Hacking. Whether you come in with a guild or not, you won’t be hacking alone.
Create a Hack to help you achieve a long-term goal
Have a certain skill you’ve always wanted to learn? An instrument you want to master? A new language you want to pick up? Create a hack that will help you accomplish this in the 2022 season and submit it here.
Build a Twilio Powered Game
If you’ve been attending hackathons for a while, it’s likely you’ve used Twilio, but have you used it to create a game? Get creative and build a game powered by Twilio.
Create a new Social Media Platform
Social media is not without its flaws, so why not try to build your perfect social media platform. Maybe it’s for folks who share the same interests as you, other hackers trying to form teams, or a new competitor of TikTok
Create a Reminder Application
Keep forgetting to submit your challenges on time? We’ve got you covered. Create an application that will help remind you of any tasks you ask it to!

Calling all sporty hackers! Create a simulator of your favorite sport. This can be as complex or simple as you’d like.
Create a Chat Application
Chat rooms may not be as popular as they once were, but that’s no reason to not try making your own. Create a chat application that allows users to communicate with each other. For added complexity, you could put in moderation features or even bots to chat with.
Create a hack promoting equal access to CS education and host it on a .Tech domain!
Learning to Code should not be limited by gender, race or nationality. Help us build solutions that create greater access to computer science for students around the globe, especially young women and those from marginalized communities. Host your solution / hack using a .Tech domain from Domain.com to earn points for your guild and possibly change the world for the better.
Build a Search Hack using Jina AI
Jina is an open source search framework that makes building AI-powered search applications even easier for hackers. Create search functionality that matches all kinds of data, including text, images, video & more! Check out Jina’s GitHub Repo to get started!
Build a Water Hack
Effective water usage and availability present a huge challenge to communities across the globe! Help hack a better solution!
